In Pass It On, early AAs tell the story of an alcoholic-addict who comes to a meeting dressed in partial drag. The meeting is abuzz with whether he should be permitted to remain and recover. After much argument, the conclusion is drawn: The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. And this member stayed.
In this issue, the special section shares stories of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members. A woman struggles with a crush on her sponsor in “On Dangerous Ground.” In “OK in My Skin,” an AA feels harassed for his sexual orientation and ultimately emerges with a stronger sense of self. And in “Tropic of Temptation,” a man learns just how volatile the mix of sex and sobriety can be. But above all else, each of these stories describes a desire to stop drinking, no matter the obstacles.
