August 2011: Love on the Rocks
From the August 2011 Grapevine Magazine
An AA relationship is put to the ultimate test when a wife's affair with his sponsee is revealed
"I turned to see the police taking her up the hill in handcuffs and said to myself: I’m going to marry that girl."
I was sitting there minding my own business in the front row of my home group, about 90 days off booze, when she walked in. I have no hair, so I could feel her eyes burning into the back of my skull. I knew what my sponsor would say. I’d heard it (over and over) before.
After the meeting, I sat outside on a little bench by the smoking area. The daily reflection that morning had been about God’s will, so I told myself I wasn’t going to say anything. If she approached me, however, well, then it must be God’s will.
