July 2012: Hope in a Lock Box

AA gives a prisoner the key to sobriety and a way to repair the past

In February 2009, I was arrested for crimes committed as a direct result of alcoholism. When I arrived at the camp where I would be spending the next three years of my life, I knew I’d hit bottom. I sought help to recover from all my troubles. I applied to be a part of the prison’s substance abuse program. Little did I know where God would take me.

My treatment counselor suggested I read page 30 in the Big Book every day until treatment class began, which was about three weeks away. I did as was suggested. I actually took it a step further and read the whole book. What an adventure that was! When I got to page 18, I got very depressed because for the first time, I was confronted with myself. Yes, I could see clearly that every poor soul who crossed this alcoholic’s path had suffered greatly.
