July 2012: The Missing Puzzle Piece

Her search to complete the picture led to something a whole lot better

Jigsaw puzzle: A puzzle consisting of a mass of irregularly shaped pieces that form a picture when fitted together. It sounds like a recovering alcoholic’s life.

It was 2003, and I was a few weeks sober, fidgeting in the middle of the night. Nothing to watch on TV, tired of reading, and desperately in need of something to do with my hands. Suddenly I had the idea of going to the 24-hour pharmacy to buy a puzzle. That would do the trick. Puzzles have never been my strong suit, but surely it would keep my hands occupied and might tire me out so I could go to sleep. I was still unemployed, so I had to scrounge around the house for money. I searched under the couch cushions, through pockets and the laundry room, and scraped together a little more than a dollar. I remembered the pharmacy sold two puzzles for a dollar. I couldn’t wait to get there.
