Consequences of Alcohol Abuse on College Campuses

According to a columBIA UNIVERSITY REPORT, 49% (3.8 million) of full-time college students binge drink and/or abuse prescription and illegal drugs. The study, by Columbia's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, also found that 22.9% of full-time college students meet the medical criteria for substance abuse and dependence, two-and-a-half times the 8.5% of the general population who meet these same criteria. Consequences of abuse on college campuses noted in the report included 1,717 deaths from unintentional alcohol-related injuries and 97,000 alcohol-related rapes or sexual assaults in 2001.
