58th General Service Conference

The "Conference That Wouldn't End

Armed with the principles of AA and a genuine passion for the Third Legacy of Alcoholics Anonymous, members of the 58th Canada/U.S. General Service Conference of Alcoholics Anonymous sequestered themselves in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Broadway from April 27 to May 3, 2008. Delegates (ninety-three), trustees (thirteen alcoholic/seven non-alcoholic), AA World Service non-trustee directors (three) and Grapevine nontrustee directors (three), along with General Service Office/Grapevine staff members (fifteen) came together with the task of forging another link in the growth of Alcoholics Anonymous.

First-year delegates were given a loving welcome by the more seasoned Conference members and were brought into the fold with words of encouragement and lots of hugs. On Saturday evening, before the Conference began, all the delegates met for official introductions and a brief overview of the week to come. France J. (Area 89-Northeast Quebec) gave the welcome address and three second-year delegates explained the workings of the committee system, the Conference process, and delegates' reports. Two other second-year delegates were selected "from the hat" to share some of their experience from last year's Conference and to answer any questions the newcomers might have.
