August 2012: Alley Cat

He and his furry buddy went through early sobriety together

I was one year sober when an AA friend suggested that I get a pet—preferably a kitten. I thought her suggestion was very strange, since she knew that all the plants I had tried to keep died from over-feeding and over-watering. But I trusted this person, so off I went to the local animal shelter.

At the shelter desk I was told that there were no kittens for adoption, but they had a cat that was approximately four months old. Then I was directed to the area of the building were the cats were kept in cages. All the cats were napping serenely, either curled or stretched out in various positions of repose. That is—all except one.
