February 2014: 24-Hour Delivery

Doing service with Meetings on Wheels gives this guy the ride of his life

When the elevator doors opened we could barely get through the crowd of tearful women, teenagers whispering on their cellphones, men pacing up and down and several police officers. The hospital chaplain was trying to console the mother of a 4-year-old who had just been critically burned in an accidental home gas explosion. At the end of the hall there was a door marked “Burn Unit”; we made our way through the crowd into the room.

“We’re here to see Jeff M.,” we told the nurse. Jeff was in his early 30s, new to AA, and had been accidently burned as well. For the next hour we had a meeting with Big Book readings, a topic discussion, good fellowship and a closing prayer. We left our phone numbers and an offer for a return visit.
