December 2012: A Mother's Prayer

A grieving mom shares hope for others who might find this program

Pray as I have always done: “Bless my son and grandsons, and give them everything I have and want, and let your will not theirs be done.” Only now there is a difference. My son is dead.

I still pray as if nothing has changed, but everything has changed. Now I am left wondering how I should alter my prayer since the hope I had is gone. In January, two detectives came to my apartment to tell me that my son was found dead in a hotel room. The cause was excessive alcohol—a 3.3% level. He was 47. The coroner who called to tell me the autopsy report also informed me that he had six empty bottles of vodka in the room, along with 100 empty bottles of beer, hidden under his bed. She said that he died peacefully, that he had gone into a coma and stayed that way until his lungs stopped working.
