June 2013: My smart mouth

My mom always said I had a smart mouth, and it got even smarter and faster when I was submerged in alcoholic drinking. When attacked, I always used the counterattack ploy, because my best defense was a good offense: Get ‘em before they get me.

Doing a Fourth Step uncovered this behavior. I realized that since I was no longer drinking there was absolutely no need for me to keep that defense in my repertoire, but old habits die really hard. I remember arguing this point with a good friend in my home group who always said, “Good habits are just as easy to adopt as bad habits.” My argument was that that could be true if you had no habit at all and had to choose between a good one or a bad one—that would work fine. But what about the bad habits I had already perfected?
