June 2013: Dear Grapevine

Celebration in Akron: People from six countries and just about every state in the U.S. by Terry H.

Here comes Founders’ Day
I was blessed to be part of the annual Founders’ Day celebration last June in Akron, Ohio. I was amazed at the amount of people there! I live in a small community of 10,000, and although I grew up in Montreal, the thought that there were as many people at Founders’ Day as live in my town was incredible to me.

I met people from six countries and just about every state in the U.S. We went on a tour to visit the Akron intergroup office, Dr. Bob’s grave and the Mayflower hotel, and members from Russia were on our bus. One gentleman stood up front and translated. It was quite something to hear the history of AA in both English and Russian. The main event of the weekend was held in the football stadium of Akron University, with a sobriety countdown. There was one member who had 63 years, and someone who had one day. The cheers were deafening.
