July 2013: Candy Man

I went blind in prison due to a botched surgery back in 1997. I was only 10 months sober. Man, I thought sobriety was hard. Add prison to it! You’re in there, everyone is hurting, and they don’t give a crap about one another.

But this one con, James, told me that if I wanted to get healed of a broken heart, I had to help others. He might as well have been talking Greek! Of course, I had excuses for being pitiful. Hell, I’m blind—in prison. Is that not good enough? Everyone around me can see.
