July 2013: Hope in the Mail

I first started going to AA meetings at Avenal State Prison in 1991. I didn’t understand the whole thing. I was skeptical of the God stuff, but I liked that the meetings were a positive, calm oasis in the chaotic place where I lived, so I kept coming back.

After a few months I picked up that blue book on the table and took it back to my dorm and read it. I don’t have the experience that a lot of people have who came into AA, sitting in the back of the meeting and hating everything about it; the first time I read the Big Book I fell in love with the program.
