October 2013: Cruising for a Boozing

A very nervous day counter learns quickly how to sail straight on the high seas

I was terrified. My planned Caribbean cruise was barely six weeks off, and I had been sober less than half that time. It was too late to cancel the trip I had promised my wife, and I didn’t know how on earth I’d spend a week on a ship full of booze without drinking.

At almost every meeting I asked, “How am I not going to drink? I’ll be in the middle of the ocean with nowhere to hide and my phone won’t work and everyone will be drinking. What will I do?”
