Walking the Walk

Stationed far from home and with drinking all around her, a newcomer calls up her AA tools to stay sober another day

I started drinking when I was 14. I loved it. Alcohol helped me to feel like I could do anything. The rules didn’t apply to me when I was drunk. Back then I could only drink on the weekends and alcohol was difficult to obtain.

As I got older, alcohol was much easier to come across and my drinking became an every-other-day thing. Alcohol was still fun but soon I was left feeling like something was missing. I felt as though I needed to do more with my life. So I enlisted in the Marine Corps.
