Dream trip - canceled

When a freak car accident ends their camping trip, it’s AA hospitality that saves the day

It’s been almost 15 years since my sober friend and I set out to camp from San Francisco to Alaska. We had maps, camping gear and tents, and a few pieces of AA literature. We were ready to spend time pitching tents and sleeping in campgrounds through the Western Coast and into Canada. I hadn’t done much camping, since I am from the suburbs of New York City, but I looked forward to the experience of seeing the country, and especially going back to Alaska, because I had traveled there as a child.

Unexpectedly, three days into our trip, we were driving in the state of Washington when a car on the other side of the freeway jumped over the barricades and crashed Dukes of Hazzard-style into the car immediately next to us. The driver of the car that jumped the barricade was killed instantly and a chain-reaction wreck ensued, which included our car. Eleven cars were involved in the pileup, with many injured people and three fatalities. Thankfully, my friend and I were both OK, but her car was totaled. It was a sad and tragic event.
