Although Providence Lunatic Asylum (later Providence Retreat) [in Buffalo, N.Y.] was primarily for the mentally ill, almost immediately it provided help for alcoholics. The programs developed at this institution over 100 years ago show again the remarkable far-sightedness of the Sisters of Charity. The care of the alcoholics and mentally ill was not merely custodial, but rehabilitative.
