While I Am Very Young

FOUR weeks ago tonight I came to my first AA meeting.

Tonight I've been back to the same group. The same meeting place, the same time. The people have the same names and the same faces, but they are different people. Four weeks ago they were enemies of mine--lucky people who didn't have to worry about no drink today, no drink tomorrow, no drink forever. They were smug do-gooders, content with their own four years dry, twenty-two months dry, and thirty-five weeks without a drop. They did not notice me, then; they could not care that I had come into their mysteries all on fire and wholly self-shamed.
