A Dream Keeps It Real

An alcoholic's nightmare

An assortment of disagreeable life situations had failed to meet my perceived needs, but until I had a drinking dream--it felt more like a nightmare--I was unaware of the depths or magnitude of my discontent. The dream frightened and humbled me, and also brought home the fact that I do indeed suffer from a disease called alcoholism.

I had heard many people talk about drinking dreams but I had never experienced one. I didn't actually sip a drink in my dream, but I strongly believed the solution to my problems was to get my hands on some wine and get smashed. I had a vague, passing thought during the dream about calling a friend in the program for guidance, but my will overruled any right thinking. My focus remained on getting drunk so I wouldn't have to feel so bad. I awoke feeling scared and realized that my sobriety is more fragile than I thought.
