It's Harder for Some!

I HAVE noticed a few times in my wonderful years of being in A.A. that there often is, in a group, some poor soul who has more difficulty making the Program than others. He however returns again and, again. Not so long ago I met one of my more unfortunate brothers outside our club room, very much disgusted with himself. He said, "I don't suppose I will ever make it." I am sure he felt just that way. I gave him a dollar for drink, and went into the club room where one of our more worthy brethren, who fortunately has never slipped, said to me, "Did you see that drunk out there?" My heart sank within me, not in sympathy for this poor drunk fellow man of mine, but for the loneliness this other man will surely suffer for lack of understanding, maybe not now, but in time to come he will. I do not believe we can continue to enjoy this beautiful Program, and judge our brother who is more slow to learn.
