How Many U.S. Alcoholics?

Neither the Census Bureau nor the American Medical Association keep any count record of U. S. alcoholics. Best available figure is probably that reported by the Quarterly Journal of Studies On Alcohol (Volume 13, No. 2). Based on 1949 statistics that have only become available for analysis this year, there were 3,852,000 (and maybe You) at that time. In table form, as prepared by Dr. E. M. Jellinek, this was the score:
