Staying Sober in the Sand
Around the world, without picking up the first drink
In 1996, after nineteen years of sobriety, I was called in as peacekeeper in the Golan Heights for the Canadian Forces. This was my second United Nations tour sober. My first one was in Cyprus in 1981 with five years of sobriety. I did one tour in Egypt in 1973 before finding the program of Alcoholics Anonymous and it was extremely dangerous--not the war-torn situation, but my drinking. It was dangerous to me and everyone else.
