Dear Grapevine

Book ends

I COULD truly identify with Joe S., the writer of "Rare and Elusive" (January 2010) in his pursuit of books. I have a love of literature that sometimes crosses the line into unacceptable behavior. One of the first amends I had to make when I got sober was to send back books that I had "borrowed" from a monastery. These days I still wrestle with the temptation to take similar "useful" volumes when I see them on display. But if I take them I may be depriving some of an Eleventh Step experience. "Useful books" are not to be stolen or held hostage.
