A circle of AA women carry a struggling beginner through the rough times

I AM the oldest of four, a farm kid from northwest Ontario relocated to British Columbia as I was entering grade 11. By then I was already well underway in drinking and all that went with it. It began one cold December 31 at a skating party, with really bad homemade dandelion wine. That night I transformed from an awkward, gawky, inept prepubescent to a princess with the grace of a swan and the looks of a movie star. The next day I was the ugly duckling once again--who wouldn't drink more?
