The Cockeyed Halo

I FIRST met "Duke" at my initial meeting in Alcoholics Anonymous, and even through my rum-soaked vision I recognized that he was no ordinary individual. Smartly, but inexpensively attired, his poise, gentle mannerisms and vocabulary certainly belied my sponsor's description of him. . ."That guy is a living miracle of what this Program can do. Just 17 months ago an old college pal dragged 'Duke' off skid row, tattered, stumbling and sick. He's been in more booby hatches and jails than he can remember. . . . I'll introduce you to him later. . . ."
