IN the city of Baghdad-on-the-Subway there lived a merchant named Ali Kahal. For many years he had been a familiar figure in the bazaars and market places where it had once been thought that Ali was certain to become an important Merchant Prince and amass many bags of shekels. Ali himself thought so.
