Delbert, El Diablo

HE was one of the finest examples of roving reporter and two-fisted drinking man Texas ever produced. A tall, dark hellion was Delbert, looking and sounding like he'd feel more at home in a 10-gallon hat and high-heeled boots, but dressed faultlessly and talking as fast and charmingly as any citified feller you ever saw. An ace newsman who, like all good ones, put the words he wanted into his subject's mouth. Competent, but never sticking around long after they made him city editor, as twice happened. "An editor has no friends," he said, "and the work is steady. Almost constant, in fact."
