A MINT julep must be made exactly right or not at all, both of which are good ideas. First of all, you must crush the mint. Crush it thoroughly. This will increase its piquancy and get you a jail sentence in Maryland, Tennessee, and certain parts of South Carolina, where it is maintained that the mint should be breathed on lightly and rubbed counterclockwise once around the rim of the glass.
