It took a lot of time and money for me to discover that the best way not to be drunk today is not to take the first drink. . .to do whatever is necessary to keep from taking that first drink. If it be necessary to make myself smile for one moment or drink a raspberry malted milk or bathe my feet in the Clinch River at sunrise or go sit near an atomic stock-pile at Oak Ridge or to call a fellow AA or to tell my drinking friends that one drink would drive me completely insane or (and this is all I have actually had to do) start the day off by asking God to help. This, then, to me, is the most important thing. Right on the heels of this is to make progress on the Program. This is the place where I need a bushel basket to catch the good things that happen when I'm coming back from doing a little 12th Step work. In the past two years, I have received more job assurance, a raise, the most beautiful baby daughter in the world, sleep at night, a happy wife, a happy mother who probably has had years added to her life. . .etc. . .etc. . .
