ARE WE TOO COY ABOUT CASH?

ONLY last month AA's everywhere were taking bows for newspaper editorials extolling us for our Tradition of declining outside contributions. This month comes a reluctant announcement from the Foundation--see page 15. We were $17,000 short in 1949--something of a blow to our pride in the boast, "AA pays its own way!" The Grapevine refuses to view-with-alarm and certainly we're not going in for any fund raising. It's just that, to us it seems slightly ridiculous that our International Headquarters (which needs only $1 a head per year) should ever be found in the position of having to come abegging. Drunks are notoriously fast guys with a buck, ready to pick up the check anytime when they've got dough in their pockets. So what goes? Maybe we've got so all-fired high-minded about money that, in our disdain, we even forget to ante up for the bare necessities. It's something to think about!
