That First Drink

THE new guy in AA hears, and should always hear, a lot about that first drink. When the Good Lord permits us to present ourselves to AA for salvage and/or repair, we aren't, to say the least, marvels of reason and balance. Definitely not out of the top drawer. We are confronted with sober, happy people, who often speak a language foreign in scope and meaning to ours. The fact that AA is a Way of Life to 120,000 alcoholics, the fact that millions of sober, happy people flourish along similar spiritual lines, is of small interest at the moment--to us.
