Since sobering up and taking to AA, he's never missed a meeting (over 16 months) even though he's handicapped by a limp caused by an injury to his leg during the early stages of the war. He's become so AA-minded that every move of his daily life must be in accord with the program. On meeting a Japanese girl, he was faced with many problems, including the objection of his mother to fraternizing with a Japanese; the possible ostracism from Turkish society in the Far East; and the overcoming of his own feelings on the May/December romance.
