Our defect--alcoholism--can be transformed into our greatest asset

WE know man is the only creature in the visible universe who can know himself, can turn around and observe his own thoughts as it were, in a mirror. A stone, a tree or an animal cannot turn back in their thought to identify or contemplate themselves, or stand off and regard themselves. The human spirit can do this; it has this capacity for self-reflection which animals lack.
