How It Works

Another recovered alcoholic tells

I AM not an "old-timer." (Are there any?) I was dry, if not sober, for more years before I had my first drink than I have been in AA without a drink. I've been sober now for a few twenty-four hour periods, but, more important, as of this moment I believe the next drink is at least twenty-four hours ahead of me. I cannot possibly get drunk yesterday, so that's no feather in my cap, but it is to the everlasting credit of AA and God. Psychiatrists and M.D.s couldn't keep me sober because I did not want to get well, but this fellowship, with the guidance of a Higher Power can and has done it. I want sobriety and I don't feel I've accomplished anything extraordinary or praiseworthy by just staying away from alcohol. I am doing what I want to do. I'd rather be sober than drunk in all the ways I have been. Is that laudable?
