The Kickback

THE nervous reaction I call "the kickback" probably has happened to all alcoholics and has given some of us substantial trouble. The slang term, "kickback," usually means some sort of payment, or unexpected demand, coming in when you think everything has been settled. Applied to alcoholics it is a state of nervous tension that hits the victim long after he has been dried out and at a time when he feels perfectly safe. If we understand and expect this reaction we can save ourselves a lot of worry and possibly prevent a slip.
