Some Thoughts on the First Step

WE were riding along a Greenwich Village thoroughfare one morning and saw a derelict in a doorway tossing off his morning drink. My boss gave vent to an uncomplimentary remark and I nestled more securely into the back seat, harboring my little secret. I knew that I, that very morning, might be sitting in that Village doorway in shivering despair--But for the Grace of God.
