A New Friend

THROUGH AA I found a new friend, a new "me." "Me" is a person I know better, understand better, like better and live with better. In a sense the new "me" is the old "me" changed by exposure to truth and humility. The new "me" lives for today only, without fear of tomorrow, without regrets of yesterday, and with a feeling of usefulness for today. The old "me" lived with fear, frustration, false values, indecision, arrogance, self pity, egotism and many other destructive forces and phobias. My nurturing food was alcohol, the sustenance which is so unreliable but so necessary to the alcoholic. To the alcoholic alcohol is the elixir of life, a panacea for all troubles and ills, mental and physical. Alcohol provided a port for us from all storms, but in our hindered vision we were blind to its phony protection and the slow disintegration within ourselves.
