MORE THAN DONUTS

"When alcoholics dry up, they tighten up." Or, "when we get sober we get tight." Personally we don't believe either of these two frequently heard remarks. Alcoholics are most generous people; they never fail to respond to an appeal. But when a chairman coyly and almost apologetically says, "We have no dues or fees in AA but we do have to pay for the coffee and doughnuts and a few other things, so we'll pass the basket"--the AA member gives just what is asked for: money for coffee and doughnuts.
