From the Grass Roots

LET'S BE FRIENDS

I AM WALTER H., AN ALCOHOLIC. The AA program has become a very essential part of my life. I am by no means what could be called a good AA'er although I don't think that there is any person more conscious of his need for all that the Twelve Steps stand for than this character, who has devoted all of his years to butting his head against the brickwall of anti-social habits. I cannot change habits overnight that took years to develop. I can recognize them and admit that all of my grief has been caused by the monster of my own personality. I have been wrong so many times that even that has become a habit. I have to get used to the idea that at last in this AA thing I am right. I have been so used to defending my attitudes when they were basically wrong that it is an absolutely new experience to be right and have no defense for it other than exemplary action.
