MY FRIEND CHARLIE, an AA of considerable accumulation, stopped me this morning with the comment: Only trouble with the Grapevine is everything turns out so very all right. (See also Grass Roots letter "Skating on Cows?") Charlie, who is also a writer of some accumulation, hastened to remind me that maybe he was reacting on a professional level. But it still was worth thinking about. . .because I, a newspaper man of some accumulation, had to admit he might have something. For there is nothing a drunk, of some accumulation, hates worse than a happy ending. That's a kind of professional reaction too, I suppose.
