Dear Mom
I would like to share this letter with other arrested alcoholics. It is from my seventeen-year-old son, now away at school.
KNOWING of a discussion he had had with his fourteen-year-old brother, I had written him what was evidently partly a kind of lop-sided apology and a thinly disguised appeal for reassurance and understanding. Still a bit thin-skinned, I guess, and bitterly fearful that I had failed the boys during the four years when my drinking had passed from being a problem to a thing much beyond my ability to control.
