AS SOON AS WE THINK OF GOD'S PRESENCE within the human spirit, we are brought face to face with the timeless realities of religion; we have reached the heart of the matter. God, being a spirit, is to be worshipped in spirit and in truth--and truth, like love itself, is beyond history. Only at this level can we communicate freely both with God and with all his creatures. Love, turned towards God, is a joyful self-surrender; towards man, a compassionate insight that enables us to see every embodiment of human nature as in some way one with ourselves. We may assert our private personalities against an alien exploitation, but never against God or our fellow-humans as they are related to God. Christian "personalism" as it is sometimes called, should not be allowed to hide from view what the people of the East have understood perhaps better than we of the West--"When the ego has been forgotten, all problems end."
