"WHAT MADE so MANY OF us WANT to escape during our alcoholism?" asked the leader. "Wasn't it to avoid responsibility or to lose ourselves in oblivion? Isn't there a more realistic word for escapism--cowardice--resulting directly from our compulsion to drink?
