Prelude

A GENTLE WIND CAME through a window. . .parted the curtains, disclosing a woman lying in bed. Her face was flushed and bloated; her hair disordered, her mouth parched. She had come home at dawn with faltering, stumbling steps and flung her weary body on the bed.
