ONE-THIRD OF ALL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES consumed in the U.S. goes "down the hatch" of alcoholics, says Professor E. M. Jellinek of Yale. "U.S. males who are neither abstainers nor alcoholics consume an average equivalent of three ounces of 100-proof whiskey a day; females, one ounce," he told a recent London conference. "But U.S. alcoholics, estimated at one million (Ed. note: ??), consume about fifteen ounces of 100-proof whiskey or its equivalent, per day. Alcoholics constitute about eight per cent of all consumers, but account for approximately one-third of U.S. alcohol consumption."
