AA Around the World
S.J.M.'s request for help from Headquarters was already on its way to Calcutta, when Charley himself reappears on the scene with this letter to "Lib" at GSH answering a request for help on another inquiry which had come in from his part of the world. . . .
Dear Lib:
Thanks for your letter which was awaiting my return from a quick trip around my "beat"--Burma, Thailand, Indo China, Malaya, Indonesia and Ceylon.
Expect by this time you have heard from Calcutta where we got a small group together on my visit there at the end of May. We had twenty-seven mail inquiries from Calcutta but only four people called at the hotel. It's a start, anyway. As we get other groups started elsewhere in India will try to help them out with literature, etc., from here. We are still getting inquiries but mostly from outside Delhi.
Will get a letter off to Miss N. and let you know what the score is. Will be down that way later in the year when I go to Madras which is 70-80 miles from Vellore.
We are experiencing a summer slump at present with four members away, but have had some individual contacts to occupy me, including an English chap who expects to be shipped back to England as he is destitute. I tell him that if this last episode brings him the answer to his problem it could turn, out to be the best thing that has ever happened to him. I will give him addresses in England that he can contact on arrival. Meantime he is absorbing as much AA as possible including the Big Book, pamphlets, the Grapevine, and lengthy discussions with me when I have him up for a meal.
The response has been quite encouraging. . . .
P.S. Please note that we now have a P.O. Box No.
