Drunkenness Is No Excuse--In America

DURING THE COURSE of recent GI trials in Japan it may have come as somewhat of a surprise to American observers to learn that in the Land of the Rising Sun drunkenness is an acceptable defense in criminal cases. A suspected offender in a Japanese court need only prove mental irresponsibility because of intoxication and the jury must return a verdict of not guilty.
