Prison Seemed Worth It . . .

DURING THE YEARS from 1935 to 1940 I was in and out of prison so many times for drunkenness and petty theft that half of the time most of the other inmates didn't know that I had gone out; they thought it was the same sentence. By this time I had reached the point where paying the price no longer mattered. As long as I could stay drunk while outside, it was possible to sweat it out inside.
