From the Grass Roots

NO SUBSTITUTE

I JUST READ, "Do I Have a Permanent Hangover" in the March Grapevine and could almost feel what this alcoholic is going through. I never had experience (thank God) with bromides myself, although have heard many stories about it. I guess that is why I took barbiturates. I had been sober for three years in AA and was sober six years before coming into AA. After five years of sobriety I became very nervous and went to a doctor. He gave me a prescription for barbiturates. Being an alcoholic, I don't have to tell you what happened. I abused them and, like the writer, I wound up in a psycho ward. When I came out I stayed away from both for about three months and then I started to drink. After a month of drinking and taking pills, I went into St. Johns Hospital where I heard of AA.
