IN the early dawn of a New Zealand morning, when a country police sergeant pushed open the door of a bushman's hut, he was startled to see a prostrate form on the floor and a swaying figure, with head bowed and arms extended in bewildered appeal. He knew the latter--Peter, an expert bushman and a man of good repute.
